After Bundesliga game week one gave us excitement and a sprinkling of debut goals, but (RB Leipzig’s defeat aside) little in the way of shock results, which players will be sitting pretty in the top scorers list come the end of the 2017/18 season?
- Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Borussia Dortmund – 31 Goals
- Robert Lewandowski – Bayern Munich – 30 Goals
- Anthony Modeste – 1. FC Köln – 25 Goals
- Timo Werner – RB Leipzig – 21 Goals
- Mario Gómez – VfL Wolfsburg – 16 Goals
Of the top five scorers from last season, only Anthony Modeste has moved on, having joined Chinese Super League side Tianjin Quanjian FC on an extended loan deal leaving the other four vying for top position during the 2017/18 season barring any late transfer deals.
Potential heirs to the throne Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be keen to regain his title this season but with rumours of a move away from Dortmund still in the press on a weekly basis, Robert Lewandowski will also fancy his chances of scooping the award this season.
If RB Leipzig can go one better than their 2nd place finish last season, they will need Timo Werner to be firing on all cylinders but after an unconvincing opening day defeat to Schalke, the controversial newcomers from last season will be hoping to kick-start their season soon to keep up the pressure on Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund and have any hopes of Werner being featured on the top scorer list.
New kids on the block
Stuttgart managed to bounce back from their season in the 2. Bundesliga thanks to goals-a-plenty from their top scorer Simon Terodde who netted an impressive 25 times during the 2016/17 season, but having seen his chances limited during a previous Bundesliga spell with 1. FC Köln, it remains to be seen whether the 29-year-old has what it takes to bring the heat in the Bundesliga this time round.
The 2. Bundesliga also boasted another top attacking talent in the 2016/17 season, namely Martin Harnik of Hannover 96. Hannover can be thankful to Stuttgart for the transfer of Harnick after the 30-year-old Hamburg born Austrian netted 17 times for the reds last year. Both are potential outsiders to feature on the top scorer list.
A bolt from the blue
Someone who has got off to a flying start at Hertha BSC is Australian attacker Matthew Leckie who has two goals in his first appearance for the Berlin side. If Europe doesn’t prove to be too much of a distraction for them and they have another impressive league season, the man from a land down-under could play a starring role and provide a surpise package in the top five scorers.
Our predictions for 2017/18 top scorers
- Robert Lewandowski – Bayern Munich
- Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Borussia Dortmund
- Mario Gómez – VfL Wolfsburg
- Timo Werner – RB Leipzig
- Matthew Leckie – Hertha BSC
We’re tipping the usual suspects to feature heavily in the top five scorers with the surprise addition of Hertha’s Leckie should he keep up his top form from game week one.
